St. Louis, MO – The Pesticide Stewardship Alliance (TPSA) held its annual conference virtually in February and presented the Leadership in Product Stewardship – Private or the “Pizzy” Award to Scott Birchfield, Syngenta Crop Protection.

Birchfield was recognized for the work he has put into getting the word out to pesticide refillers and others about the pesticide container and containment regulations.

In 2016, USEPA’s new regulations for pesticide containers and containments were in full force.  Overtime, the regulated community discovered their understanding of the regulations was not complete.  As a result, many retailers and pesticide manufacturers faced penalties related to noncompliance with various components under the regulations.  Syngenta Crop Protection, and especially Scott Birchfield, developed a 5-module training tool to inform and educate interested parties in many elements of the pesticide container and containment rules.

Since 2017, the training modules developed has been made available for free at the website, https://bulkpesticiderules.org./  the training modules cover:

  • Proper Documentation for Pesticide Repackaging Establishments.
  • Labeling Requirements that are Applicable to Repackaging Pesticides.
  • Achieving Proper Containment for Bulk Pesticide Tanks at Repackaging Locations.
  • Design, Managing and Cleaning Bulk Tanks.
  • Pesticide Transfer Requirements and Managing Portable Refillable Containers.

These modules are excellent tools to aid the regulated community’s understanding of complex regulations.

The Pesticide Stewardship Alliance (TPSA), founded in 2000, is an organization of federal, state, and local governmental agencies, educational and research institutions, public organizations, private corporations, and individuals that are actively involved in different aspects of pesticide stewardship.  The goals of TPSA are to increase the effectiveness, efficiency and longevity of various pesticide stewardship efforts.

Please go to the TPSA web site for more information. The 2022 Pesticide Stewardship Conference is scheduled for February 1-3 in Reno, Nevada.
