Get to Know Nicole Jansen – Board of Directors President

The Pesticide Stewardship Alliance (TPSA) is proud to spotlight our newly elected President, Nicole Jansen. Born and raised in Iowa, Nicole takes great pride in leading Global Stewardship for Seed Applied Technologies at Corteva Agriscience, right in her home state. Her 13-year tenure at Corteva reflects her dedication to product stewardship.

Nicole’s 3-year journey with TPSA includes roles as a member, Pesticide Industry Board member, and Co-Chair of the Treated Seed Task Force, alongside Jack Ranney. Her swift progression to Vice-President and now President underscores her commitment and expertise in agricultural stewardship.

I LOVE AGRICULTURE! I think it’s incredibly important in so many ways, clearly for food, feed, and biofuels, but also for the livelihood it provides millions of people globally who work to keep the world fed, clothed, and fueled. I get to engage every day in providing some of the agricultural starting blocks, namely agricultural treatments and seed, which helps to drive the global agricultural engine.

Kimberly Gilbert initially inspired Nicole to pursue the role of TPSA President. Nicole’s dedication to pesticide stewardship highlights her deep appreciation for agriculture’s positive impact on humanity. She emphasizes the need to incorporate stewardship principles from the outset of agricultural product development to ensure both safety and effectiveness for farmers.

“The most rewarding part of my career has been the learning aspect. I learn something new every day, whether I want to or not.  That’s really the best part.  It puts me in contact with so many people with whom I’ve developed great relationships. I’ve been able to travel to parts of the world I would never see otherwise, and it’s allowed me to build things that may live on after I retire. I really have had great opportunities at Corteva because of the interesting complexities in modern agriculture.”

Nicole has a PMP certification for project management, which fits her natural inclination to formulate a plan, work that plan, and see it through to completion.

Outside work, Nicole runs a highly exclusive Uber service for her 15-year-old daughter, Tatum. Nicole loves reading Louise Penny books and watching TikTok grooming videos of tiny Japanese dogs. A true crime enthusiast, she’s fond of shows like Dateline and even owns a Keith Morrison-themed sweatshirt.

Nicole is also an avid collector. She has a collection of glassware, including Fostoria and Venetian glass, with a particular fondness for Murano Millefiori. Additionally, she collects Pioneer Hi-Bred memorabilia, including unique coffee cups, a 1980s coffee carafe, a pie plate, belt buckles, hats, and even a 1980s puffer vest.

Nicole’s favorite quote is from Tony Robbins: “The biggest problem we have is thinking we shouldn’t have problems.” This quote helps her navigate unexpected difficulties by reminding her that problems are a part of life and they provide opportunities for growth.

Her favorite stewardship-related quote is from Robert Swan: “The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” Nicole explains, “It’s about not relying on your neighbor to do a little extra to cover what you aren’t doing. It’s about everyone doing their part in stewarding our planet for future generations.

Nicole is excited to be at the TPSA conference in Charleston, SC next February. She looks forward to reconnecting with TPSA members and exploring the city for the first time.

TPSA is a great organization of like-minded folks, who I believe all agree that Stewardship is a ‘duty of care’ and take that very seriously. I’m very honored to be president of TPSA and hope to be a TPSA member for many years to come.

Be sure to say hello to Nicole at TPSA26 in Charleston!
